Most gutter problems are repairable: hangers that pulled out of the wood, runs that lost their pitch, joints whose sealant failed, or water getting behind the gutter because the roof edge has no drip edge. Alpha Eagle Roofing finds the cause with a water test, replaces rotted fascia before re-hanging anything, reseals and re-pitches the gutter, and tests it again. If the gutters are worn out, we tell you that replacement is the better use of your money.
Who this service is for
- Gutters that sag, pull away from the house or have dropped at one end.
- Drips at corners, end caps or joints during rain.
- Water running down the fascia or siding behind the gutter.
- Downspouts that came loose, clog repeatedly, or dump water against the house.
- Storm or branch damage to one section of gutter.
- Repair items from a home inspection report before a sale.
Problems we repair
Sagging or pulling away
Hangers have worked loose or are fastened into rotted wood.
Leaking corners and joints
Old sealant at miters, end caps, outlets and section joints has dried out and cracked.
Standing water in the gutter
The run has lost its pitch, so water sits instead of flowing to the outlet.
Water behind the gutter
No drip edge or gutter apron, or a gutter hung too low below the roof edge.
Overflow at one corner
A roof valley shooting water past the gutter, or an outlet that is too small or blocked.
Loose or crushed downspouts
Missing straps, broken elbows, or a downspout bent by a ladder or a branch.
How we repair gutters
- Find the cause We clean the area enough to see, run water through the gutter, and watch where it leaks, sits or overflows.
- Check the wood We probe the fascia and rafter tails behind the gutter. Rotted sections are replaced first, or new hangers will fail too.
- Fix the roof edge Where water runs behind the gutter, we add drip edge or a gutter apron so it lands inside the gutter.
- Re-hang and re-pitch New hidden hangers into sound wood, with the run reset to a steady fall toward its outlet.
- Reseal joints Old sealant removed and joints cleaned to bare metal before new gutter sealant goes on, so it actually bonds.
- Outlets and downspouts Outlets resealed or enlarged, elbows and straps replaced, and discharge carried away from the foundation.
- Test again and document A second water test to confirm the fix, with before and after photos in your CompanyCam record.
The repairs we do most often
These cover most of the gutter calls we get on Bay Area homes.
Re-hanging sagging gutters
Old spike-and-ferrule hangers work loose as the wood dries and swells. We replace them with hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia and rafter tails, at close spacing.
Re-pitching
A gutter that holds water corrodes from the inside and grows algae. We reset the run so water flows to the outlet without visibly tilting the gutter.
Resealing corners and end caps
The most common leak on seamless gutters. Done properly it means removing the old sealant, cleaning the metal and resealing, not adding a layer on top.
Splash guards at valleys
A short guard at the corner where a valley empties keeps fast-moving water from overshooting the gutter in a downpour.
Section replacement
When a branch or a ladder has crushed one section, we replace that section and match the profile and color as closely as available materials allow.
Downspout repair
Reattaching, re-strapping and replacing broken elbows, and clearing clogs. Clogs in underground drain lines may need a drain-cleaning service, and we tell you when that is the case.
Fascia rot: fix it before re-hanging
Gutters that keep pulling loose are usually telling you something about the wood behind them.
Why fascia rots
Water running behind the gutter, from a missing drip edge or a gutter set too low, soaks the fascia board every storm. Over a few seasons it softens, and hangers lose their grip.
What we do
We replace the rotted fascia sections, add drip edge or gutter apron so it does not happen again, and only then re-hang the gutter.
What it tells you about the roof
Rot at the fascia sometimes continues into the roof deck edge. If we find that, we show you photos and explain whether it is a local repair or part of a larger roof repair.
Repair or replace?
We would rather tell you a gutter is done than sell you repairs every winter.
Repair makes sense when
The gutter metal is sound, and the problem is local: a few joints, one run out of pitch, some loose hangers, one damaged section.
Replacement makes sense when
The gutters are rusting through, leaking along the whole run, too small for the roof, or have been re-hung several times. See seamless gutter installation.
If a reroof is coming
If your roof will be replaced in the next few years, we may suggest a minimal repair now and new gutters with the new roof.

Call (415) 410-7917What affects the cost
We do not publish repair prices, because what looks like the same leak can have a different cause on every house. Your written estimate is built from these factors:
- Number of joints, corners and outlets to reseal
- Length of gutter to re-hang and re-pitch
- Fascia replacement and drip edge or gutter apron needed
- Sections or downspouts to replace, and matching the existing profile and color
- Number of stories, roof height and ladder access
- Whether a water test and cleaning are needed to find the problem
Timeline, permits and inspection
How long it takes
Most gutter repairs are done in a single visit of a few hours. Fascia replacement or matching a less common profile or color can add a second visit.
Permits and final inspection
Gutter repairs generally do not need a building permit. If the repair turns into roof-edge or deck work that your city permits, we tell you and pull the permit.
Warranty and photo documentation
Written warranty
Every job we do comes with a written workmanship warranty, and the roofing materials carry their own manufacturer warranty on top of that. The exact terms for your job are written into your contract before any work starts, so you know what is covered and for how long before you sign. See our warranty page for how our warranty works.
Every job photographed in CompanyCam
We document every job in CompanyCam: before photos, in-progress photos of the work that ends up hidden (decking, underlayment, flashing), and after photos. That photo record is useful long after we leave, for an insurance claim, a warranty question, or a buyer's inspector when you sell. We can share it with you on request. See finished work in our project gallery.
Your protections under California law
Check the license.
Roofing in California must be done by a contractor licensed by the Contractors State License Board. Ours is CSLB #1148511, Class C-39 (Roofing). You can look up any contractor at cslb.ca.gov.
The down payment is capped by law.
On a home improvement contract, a California contractor may not ask for a down payment of more than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less.
Payments should not get ahead of the work.
Progress payments are supposed to track work actually completed and materials delivered, not run ahead of them.
You have a right to cancel.
California home improvement contracts must include a written notice of your right to cancel, generally within three business days of signing (seniors get a longer window).
Everything in writing.
Scope, materials, schedule, payment schedule, and warranty belong in the written contract. We price every job from an inspection, in writing, so there is nothing to argue about later.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my gutters pulling away from the house?
Usually the hangers have worked loose or the fascia behind them has rotted. Re-hanging into rotted wood does not last, so we check the fascia, replace what is soft, and re-hang with hidden hangers into sound wood.
Why is water running behind my gutters?
Most often a missing drip edge or gutter apron, or a gutter hung too low below the roof edge. Water runs down the fascia behind the gutter and rots it. We add the edge flashing and reset the gutter height.
Can leaking gutter seams be fixed?
Yes. The old sealant has to be removed and the metal cleaned before new gutter sealant is applied, or the new sealant will not bond. Sectional gutters with leaks at every joint are often better replaced with seamless runs.
My gutters hold water. Is that a problem?
Yes. Standing water corrodes the gutter, adds weight to the hangers and breeds mosquitoes. The run needs to be re-pitched toward its outlet, and sometimes an extra outlet added.
Do you repair gutters you did not install?
Yes. Most of our repair work is on gutters installed by someone else. We tell you honestly whether a repair will hold.
Can you fix gutters during the rainy season?
Yes, between storms. Rain actually helps us see where a gutter leaks or overflows, but we only work on ladders and roof edges when it is safe.
Is the repair warrantied?
Yes. Repairs carry our written workmanship warranty, and the terms for your repair are in writing before we start.
